Proactiv says No No to Social Media FOMO

Be Proactiv about your self-esteem

We live in a world where Social Media dominates our lives for better or for worse and FOMO is affecting everybody from teens to mums. creating anxiety for all ages.  Sometimes it’s important to come up for air and remember all the good things that Social Media offers too and try to just keep it real!

A study of 528 Australian mothers earlier this year * found that 50% of these mothers were ‘addicted’ to Facebook and that ¼ were losing sleep because of it.  The survey found that anxiety in 25-44-year-old mothers was twice that of men of the same age and that anxiety levels actually rose with every hour they spend on Social Media. As for teenagers, FOMO is alive and kicking:

  • 66% of teenagers wanted to share details online when they were having a good time
  • 60% worried that friends were out having fun without them
  • 51% felt anxious if they didn’t know what their friends were doing
  • 78% said it was important that they understood their friends’ ‘in jokes’*

When you consider the benefits of Social Media – a feeling of being engaged and connected with your friends even when not with them, it is shocking that 1 in 2 teenagers feel that they are ‘missing out’ and that, although it is often thought that teenage girls are most at risk from the negative impact of social media, the 18-35-year-old group were actually those that expressed the highest feelings of being left out.

Social Media should be a place where we can indulge and feel good about ourselves, appreciating it exactly for what it is meant to be – sharing, connecting and enjoying the moments that appear before our eyes – just because we can’t get to a particular party or event doesn’t mean that we miss out.  Social Media allows us to engage with what is happening – our friends can share photos and videos with us instantaneously.  It’s as good as the real thing! There’s so much to look forward to on Social Media and with constant advancements in technology, it’s bringing people together like never before and that on its own, should be celebrated.
