In March 2012, DCA Enterprises launched Australia’s first ever Oz Comic-Con (http://www.ozcomiccon.com/) pop culture expo in Adelaide.
For DCA Enterprises, OCC was a make or break event. We knew that pre-event PR and publicity was more than important – it was absolutely crucial to generate ticket sales and forge key relationships in what was essentially an untested market. Having worked with Blue Planet PR on previous projects, we did not hesitate to retain them as OCC’s PR team.
Blue Planet PR took a strategic and well thought through approach right from day one. Not only did they focus on traditional media channels to get the word out, but their online focus also ensured OCC was being promoted to the right audiences through the right mediums. They also helped DCA Enterprises connect with key officials, such as the Hon. Gail Gago, SA Minister for Tourism.
DCA Enterprises was hoping for ticket sales between 6,000 and 8,000 across the weekend of Oz Comic-Con Adelaide. Imagine our surprise and delight when we had hit the 8,000 mark by midday Saturday – and ended up with ticket sales over 18,000 across the entire weekend.
Without a doubt, the publicity generated by Blue Planet PR played a major role in driving attendance numbers. The week before the event (a vital sales period) saw OCC appear not only on the cover of The Adelaide Advertiser and SA Weekend magazine, but also in The Sunday Mail, the Messenger Group newspapers, multiple online channels and national TV, such as Channel 10’s ‘The Project’.
In addition, Blue Planet PR played a vital role at the actual event. Maggie Scardifield’s attendance ensured the OCC press office ran smoothly – she coordinated celebrity interviews, assisted with last-minute media requests, and generally remained cool, calm and collected in an otherwise crazy atmosphere.
The Blue Planet PR team has helped DCA Enterprises launch the Oz Comic-Con brand with a bang – and the ongoing success of our events will be a testament to their hard work and dedication. We look forward to our continuing relationship with the Blue Planet PR team.
